Default Merlin M140 XBL feedback

Does anyone have positive or negative experiences with the JetsMunt Merlin 140 XBL engine? I really like the idea of Brushless starter and pump.
Thanks,
Jim

The one time I ignored my personal policy of never voluntarily buying a first year production model of anything with a significant "upgrade/change," it was a nightmare! I did that with two turbines. Neither ever worked correctly. The one that replaced one of the two (i.e. #3 of the same model) totally disintegrated internally on the 10th flight. I am now down to: Unless I knowingly decide to be the beta tester, I stick to my above policy. Its just that why take take extra risks with new technology if the old works and has been proven. Also, I have found that "new" usually means cheaper to manufacture but more expensive to buy.

Yes. I have two M 140 xbls. One in a BVM bandit MK II and the other in an ultra flash. I am very happy and would highly recommend these engine. They are light with excellent performance. I have 66 flights with one and 36 with the other. No hickups at all. Starts every time. Even after sitting for 6 months there has been no problems with the first start. In addition we have several other clubmembers with the same engines and they all have no complaints. I would highly recommend these engines.

Hello Len,

Can you contact me ([email protected]) regarding this matter? I don't have any M140 engine registered under your name, nor I remember to receive any M140 in warranty "totally desintegrated" internally". Need to learn about this issue if related to our products.

Thanks,

Gaspar

BTW, this engine model is in production since 13/6/2013, 3 years in the market, and there are close to 1,500 XBL engines in service, I think that our brushless technolgy is mature now.

Gaspar,

I think he was just making a general statement about new products and assumed this was new also. Not bad advice at all, just probably mis-placed in this conversation.

Chuck, that is how I took it too.

I have had good dealings with Gaspar for years (started with an old Wren 54 Mk2) but have had a challenging time searching for videos and other information from users on this engine.

Thanks, I'm sorry, looks that I misunderstood the sense of the post. Not being native in english, often I fail to understand the subtle language details

I was carefully wording to ensure I do not pick on any particular brand. When that is done, sometimes that leaves too much to the reader's interpretation. Sorry about that. If I keep having problems with the brand I had initially chosen, you may very well see one of your products registered to me.

I just install a M140 in a 2M viper. I put on 11 flights on it at Winamac last weekend. I found the new handheld color terminal is nice but its too small. It is hard to hit the touchscreen when the buttons are about 1/8" square. I have had Jetcats in the past and still learning the new software menus and thou they work but prefer some of the Jetcat menus and functions better. The motor runs great and has good throttle response.

Been flying my M140 XBL for about 1.5 years and absolutely love it! Only had one issue and that was the igniter failed, sent it back to them and I had it in my hands 5 days later. And no cost!

i did my careful research and found that it had one of the best thrust to weight to fuel consumption of all the turbines of that size.

For example it weighs slightly less than my K80F does and it has almost double the thrust! I was hunting for a 120 sized turbine but that fact alone swayed me to the M140.

so what I am suggesting is that people's experience with a particular brand and reliability is very important but also carefully review the spec's as well before choosing

Would I buy anothe Jet Munt? At the drop of a hat. gaspar has been fantastic to deal with as has his Australian rep. Now he just has tooooo release the M35!!!

Good luck!

thanks

dave

The OP was asking for specific feedback on the M140XBL. I thought your post was off topic and gave the wrong impression. I have 3 Jets Munt engines and wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

I have had more that 15 Jets Munt turbines, currently have 6 (six) M140XBL, 7 ( seven) M200XBL, and recently purchased a M100XBL ( with in flight restart feature )..

I can attest that they run like a "Swiss Watch". As you can tell I believe they are the best in the market. The brushless pump and starter motor are the latest in technology. The ECU is state of the art and the service is excellent.

Gaspar.. We appreciate your contribution to this hobby....

Jets Munt/Gaspar service is outstanding. I have had better service turn around going from Southern California to Spain and back than I have had on another brand going from Southern California to Central California. Communication is beyond excellent.

Gaspar treats you like you are his best and favorite customer.

Second season going(~33h) with 140XBL and it has been exellent. Engine + 5min fuel almost kilo lighter than some competition... Good acceleration and reliability. Gaspar's problem solving skills via e-mail are great. And so is service communication with Alan.

Compressor makes more noise than some of older designs but this actually is pretty scale on Hawk I'm flying with. Would I buy another one - Any time! Well as soon I have some spare money...

I can second all the positive comments. Having owned the 100xbl, the 140xbl and 200xbl I have only positive things to say about the power, fuel efficiency, starting, reliability, weight and service. All are top notch.

I should mention that I currently own 3 200xbl and a 140xbl.

Great turbines.

Head and shoulders above anything else I have flown.. perfect starts and runs on my 140xbl. extremely happy, will be buying more.

oh, it gets excellent fuel mileage.. I picked up a minute of flight time.. It has a very high efflux speed, and I picked up a little speed/thrust in my élan, and amazing vertical out of a smaller motor than was in it before.

WOW!
Based on user experiences like the above, i just ordered my FIRST Jets Munt turbine, a Merlin 140XBL for my DV8R. To say I am excited would be the understatement of the year. It is scheduled to hit my door step this Friday from Dreamworks RC! I am like a kid on Christmas morning and can't stop myself from checking the tracking number every 12 hours even though I know it will be Friday!

I look forward to running this highly rated mechanical work of art.

Anthony, you won't be disappointed! I did get one and have flown it just a few times, but it starts and runs very, very smoothly.

I was considering buying a used turbine and seriously considered the Kingtech 140 hat was on here for a while (which I am sure is a good motor). In the end I decided to spoil myself for a change. The quality and pride of ownership will remain long after I would've forgotten the money I saved.
