2S is the max for a receiver pack. I suggest this one as it is small and has lots of MAh.

Baja SS doesn't come with a radio system, so it's kind of hard to give a recommendation without knowing what transmitter they have. If they have a transmitter that takes 8AA then that's 12v and a 2s lipo is 8.4v fully charged which may not produce full signal strength. 3s is 12.6v fully charged and probably not enough to hurt most transmitters out there.

Anyway. What transmitter do you have and how many AA batteries does it take?

That transmitter is only 4aa which is 6v. I've read about people using lipo in them but I'm not really sure whether they were 1s or 2s. 2s is 8.4v fully charged and may be too much for it while 1s is 4.2v and may not be enough. A LiFe pack is probably a better solution as I believe they're 6.6v fully charged which shouldn't cause any issues. Plus most packs advertised as transmitter packs are LiFe and most chargers that can charge lipo can also charge LiFe.

As for your problem with the receiver not responding, have you tried binding the receiver to the transmitter again? The instructions are available on Spektrum's website if you need them. If that doesn't work I'd try some different servos, I've had weird things happen with bad servos. Are you sure they're plugged in correctly? The white/yellow wire of the servo lead always goes to the inside while the black/brown wire goes towards the outside of the receiver case.
